This old postcard depicts a caleche in Quebec City. The caleche has been a familiar cab vehicle in Montreal and Quebec for 150 years or more.
In Montreal in 1857, you could ride in a caleche for an hour for 37 and a half cents. The fare for the same ride in a cab drawn by one horse was 50 cents, and an hour in a two-horse coach would cost you a dollar.
As readers of Bram Stoker's Dracula are aware, the caleche is also a popular conveyance in Transylvania.
