Bill Crawley Dartmouth, NS / Sept. 17, 1995
Bill Crawley, 41, was a part-time driver just finishing his shift on September 17, 1995 when he picked up an 18-year-old man. The man had been drinking and smoking marijuana at a party in a Dartmouth hotel. He had recently been released from a youth jail.
When the cab reached Breeze Street in East Dartmouth, the man tried to run out on the $6.70 fare. Apparently Crawley tried to prevent him and wound up in the back seat on top of him. The man stabbed Crawley 23 times, piercing his brain, puncturing one lung and collapsing the other. Crawley radioed for help, but died before he could get to hospital.
The killer was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to nine years in jail, with eligibility for parole in three and a half years. He was to serve 18 months in the Nova Scotia Youth Centre in Wolfville, two years in a provincial jail, and "if necessary" the remainder of his sentence in the federal pentitentiary at Springhill.
