Gisèle Minhas Moncton, NB / July 1, 2004
Gisèle Minhas, 32, was the mother of three boys aged 14, 11 and nine. Her husband Naseem had been driving for Air Cab for about a year and in June, 2004 she too decided to try cab driving to earn some extra money. She quickly began to love the job.
Ms Minhas's mother, Roseline Martin, spoke to her at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30. Minhas had worked 21 straight nights since she joined Air Cab and told her mother that the next shift would be her last before taking the weekend off.
"She said, 'I love you Mom.' And I said, 'I love you too.' And that's the last time I talked to her."
At midnight Minhas took over her husband's taxi. At about 4:30 a.m. fellow drivers saw her go by the Chateau Moncton with a passenger in the front seat but could not say whether the passenger was male or female.
At 5:20 a.m. Minhas was found lying on the pavement behind a Gauvin Road apartment building in nearby Dieppe. She had been shot to death. Her cab was found a few blocks further east along Gauvin Road in a ditch behind a bowling alley parking lot.
Early Friday morning a 18-year-old Moncton man was taken into custody, and a 20-year-old Sackville man was also arrested a short time later. Both were charged with second-degree murder.
A Catholic funeral service was held in Baie Ste. Anne, Minhas's original home, the following Tuesday. A Muslim service was held later the same day. More than 70 taxis from Saint John, Fredericton and Moncton joined the funeral procession.
