Edgar Maltais Chibougamau, QC / June 29, 1974
Edgar Maltais, 63, was a taxi driver in Chibougamau, QC. He was shot to death with a .22 calibre rifle on a rural road near Albanel. The 30-year-old killer later phoned police to inform them of the murder. The man's lawyer argued that he was too drunk to comprehend what he was doing when he shot Maltais. He was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
A few months after being let out on parole he was convicted of an indecent assault on a woman. He was sent back to prison to complete his sentence, plus another six months.
Twenty six years after the murder of Maltais the killer, now 56, was arrested by the Dolbeau police on suspicion of having committed an armed sexual assault. On being arrested he gave the police a false birth date which prevented them from learning about his previous criminal record. Later the same day he hanged himself in his prison cell.
The truth came to light when a relative of Maltais came forward and told Le Quotidien about the murder.
