Kenneth Scott
Sidney, BC / Oct. 12, 1988

Three 17-year-olds and a 24-year-old plotted the robbery of a cab driver while drinking beer in a schoolyard, the motive being to get more beer money.

Scott, 66, was stabbed 17 times by two of the 17-year-olds. The 24-year-old was convicted of manslaughter for his part in the crime and sentenced to seven years.

The two teens who stabbed Scott were convicted of second-degree murder and given the maximum sentence allowed under the Young Offenders Act -- three years.

The third teen was sentenced to two years for manslaughter, but was acquitted on appeal to the Supreme Court, the grounds being that police did not adequately warn him of the consequences of making an incriminating statement without a lawyer present.
