Shortly after midnight on the morning of June 3, 1993, Michael Christopoulos finished his shift and headed home from Dorval Airport through the Montréal residential district of Park Extension.
He was about three blocks from his home on Liège Street when he was shot in the head from outside the cab. The car smashed into a fence and local residents, assuming that there had been an accident, phoned police. Mr. Christopoulos was found slumped over the steering wheel at about 12:45 a.m.
Witnesses claimed to have heard a young man and woman arguing in English near the scene of the murder, but police were unable to trace the couple.
Mr. Christopoulos came to Canada from Greece in 1975 with a university degree in philosophy. A quiet man who recently began working longer shifts to help his son train to be a mechanic in the U.S., Mr. Christopoulos had driven a taxi for 38 years, 15 of them for Champlain Taxi. His son worked part time driving the same cab.
He was survived by his wife, an adult daughter, an adult son and a grandson. About 1,000 people attended his funeral, including at least 500 cab drivers. Almost all of the Champlain taxi fleet of 360 cabs joined the procession. One of three flower cars displayed a floral representation of the Champlain emblem and Mr. Christopoulos's number, 427.
