Driver Profiles
Roland Faucher Québec, Québec / October 11, 1950 At about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 1950, Roland Faucher was parked on the taxi stand in Place Jacques Cartier when he was approached by a man described as being about 27 years old, five feet six inches (168 cm) in height and 125 pounds (57 kg). He had wavy blond hair, a soft voice and was well-spoken.
The man had already asked two other taxi drivers to take him to St. Pierre on L'Ile d'Orleans on the outskirts of the city, but both drivers directed him to Mr. Faucher's cab because he was first in line.
As they neared St. Pierre along a lonely country road the man asked Mr. Faucher to pull over so that he could get out of the cab for a minute. If the man actually left the cab he quickly re-entered it and shot Mr. Faucher in the back of the head. The bullet pierced the seam in the back of his cap.
Mr. Faucher collapsed against the horn button which alerted the residents of a nearby farmhouse. When they found him he was still semi-conscious. His pockets had been turned out and his empty wallet was lying a few feet away from the cab. His employer, Wilfrid Miller, said that he had little more than $19 on his person.
Mr. Faucher was taken to a city hospital but despite his serious condition staff refused to admit him without knowing who would pay for his care. They finally relented when a taxi driver who accompanied Mr. Faucher guaranteed that the hospital bill would be covered by the Association des chauffeurs de taxi de Québec. The taxi committee of the Québec city council later passed a resolution drawing the provincial health minister's attention to the case.
Mr. Faucher died three days later, on Saturday. At the coroner's inquest on the following Tuesday police revealed that they were seeking a 27-year-old native of Minto, New Brunswick as a material witness.
The man was subsequently arrested but released when witnesses at the taxi stand were unable to identify him. Three years later the case was still unsolved.

Mr. Faucher was short in stature and also physically disabled. Fellow taxi drivers placed a silver plaque in his memory on a wall adjacent to the Place Jacques Cartier stand.
