Kasif Hirani

Calgary, Alberta / December28, 2019

Kasif Hirani was a part-time Uber driver in Calgary. Originally from India, he attended college in Toronto. He moved to Calgary and married in 2016.

A friend described him as "a very kind person, kind, honest, friendly, easy-going."

At about 10 o'clock on Saturday night, December 28, 2019 Mr. Hirani left home to work an Uber shift but did not return. The next morning he was found dead on a rural road near the Springbank Airport on the northwestern outskirts of Calgary. His bronze-coloured 2013 Kia Optima was missing.

The Cochrane RCMP received the report about 8:30 Sunday morning and determined that Mr. Hirani was a victim of homicide. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hirani was survived by a brother and his parents.

The investigation quickly focused on two suspects, a 51-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman.

Both suspects were already charged with possession of property obtained by crime, theft of a credit card and failure to comply with an appearance notice. The male suspect was also charged with resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

Following an appeal for help from the public, police were able to arrest the suspects in Edmonton on January 3. Mr. Hirani's car was still missing three days after the arrests.

Ten years earlier, in 2010, the male suspect was charged with ten counts of fraud arising from a spurious cottage development deal targeting foreign athletes. One of the victims was a member of the U.S. Olympic bobsled team.
