Alphonse Roy

Deux-Montagnes, Qué / November 17, 1973

Alphonse Roy, 43, was a taxi driver from Deux-Montagnes, about 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Montréal.

On November 17, 1973, he picked up two young men, one aged 18 and the other aged 23.

The two men attacked Mr. Roy south of Saint-Jérôme, beating him with a car jack and then strangling him with a jumper cable.

After that they drove the taxi over his body three or four times. The robbery netted them eight dollars and six cigarettes. [Next column]

The 18-year-old told a coroner's jury that "we split the money 50-50 but I kept the cigarettes."

The jury found the two men criminally responsible for Mr. Roy's death.

The jury also recommended that one of the witnesses, a woman who worked as a server in a bar, be charged with perjury.
