Travis Utinen, 36, was using his minivan to give illegal taxi rides. At about 6:30 p.m. on December 17, 2014, he and two friends gave a man a ride to a Mac's convenience store where the man refused to pay the $5 fare. Mr. Utinen and the suspect began fighting and the man stabbed him in the abdomen. Mr. Utinen died in hospital. Police arrested a suspect and charged him but the Crown refused to prosecute because the suspect would likely have been acquitted on the grounds of self defence.
