Simon Yu was young student from Hong Kong attending the University of Regina and driving a taxi part time. On the night of February 5/6 1977 he was dispatched to a house on Broad Street. Seven men piled into the car (two in the front, five in the back seat) and directed him to Greer Court where a party was supposed to be in progress.
When the passengers could not locate the party, three of them left on foot to return to Broad Street. According to one of the other members of the group, they left "because they knew what was going on". When the car reached a pizza restaurant, two more men left the taxi (one said to the other, "let's get out of here").
The driver was now left alone with two men. One of them was armed with a bread knife and held it against Mr. Yu's body. The other drove the car to an alley between Halifax and Osler streets. All three men got out of the car and Mr. Yu surrendered his money and ID.
The man with the knife then forced Mr. Yu to stand spread-eagled with his face to a garage wall, and while he was in this position stabbed him in the back, driving the knife toward his heart. Mr. Yu fell to the ground. The accomplice ran off, and while the killer was distracted Mr. Yu tried to escape. The killer caught him and stabbed him three or four more times.
Both criminals discarded their boots to confuse tracking dogs and returned to Broad Street, where the killer distributed Mr. Yu's money among those present. Later in the evening police pursued "a bunch of kids" to the Broad Street address.
Everyone in the house was taken in for questioning and the connection to Mr. Yu's murder subsequently came to light. The discarded boots were recovered; blood on the accomplice's boots indicated that he had kicked Mr. Yu after the stabbing.
Both men were convicted of murder. The accomplice's appeal was dismissed.
