Women Drivers
Only seven Canadian taxi driver homicide victims are women. Two of them (Glenda Ferster and Gerdina Kruidbos) were also victims of sexual assault.
Statistically the seven women represent only three percent of the total number of 226 Canadian taxi driver homicides, compared with an estimate that 8.7 percent of Canada's 50,110 taxi drivers were women in 2012 (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Who Drives a Taxi in Canada?)
However, three percent of taxi driver homicides stretching back to 1917 is not a good measure considering that except during the two world wars when women were recruited to work in various industries as replacements for men serving in the armed forces, women taxi drivers were a rarity. In fact, between the wars and for years after World War II, regulatory agencies and taxi companies actively discouraged women from becoming taxi drives.
The seven women were attacked and killed between 1990 and 2005. During the same period a total of 52 taxi driver homicides took place, with the seven women victims comprising a little over 13 percent. Neither three nor 13 percent accord with the estimate of the percentage of women drivers in the Canadian industry, so presumably other factors have to be taken into account.
For early woman taxi drivers in France and other countries, see Les Femmes Cocher Chapter 13: Femmes Chauffeur.
The table below lists the seven female taxi driver homicide victims by name, with links to the corresponding driver profiles.
