Picture (left): The Initiation, the First Trip. Mother strongly advised me not to permit myself to climb into an automobile. What would she say if she knew that my first ride was with a woman driver? You've been very kind and didn't drive too fast on my first trip. I only wish we could do it all over again.

Taxicabs offered the first real opportunity for many people to ride in an automobile. In 1907 it could still be a giddy adventure.
