Speedometers did not become standard equipment on cars until the 1920s. Top gear, high gear or, in this case, third gear were synonyms for top speed.

Trying to please an impatient customer put a driver at risk of getting a speeding ticket (as we shall see shortly). But fast driving also meant more trips during a shift and therefore more money. Combined with this was the thrill of being in command of a fast car and the temptation to show off.
