In turn of the century cities pedestrians meandered all over the roadways and regarded sidewalks as nothing more than a convenient wet-weather refuge from semi-liquid horse manure.

Early cars could travel up to six times as fast as city horses normally did and their speed of approach was therefore hard to gauge. Moreover, although cars were noisy, their noise was unfamiliar to ears attuned to a horsedrawn world and therefore not easy to identify.

As a result many a pedestrian who blithely stepped off the curb never knew what hit him.
