This photo may have been meant to show Mme. Dufaut cruising the streets for fares, but the scene has attracted the usual gaggle of gawkers, a couple of porters mugging the camera and an inquisitive dog in the background. There seems to be another cab parked behind Mme. Dufaut's.

Large cities like Paris and London established legal cab stands but not nearly enough of them to accommodate the numbers of licensed cabs. With nowhere to park cab drivers "crawled" along the streets trolling for fares at the risk of being fined for obstructing traffic.
