Mme. Lutgen / 4
Picture (left): Mme Lutgen, ex-comtesse du Pin de la Guérinière. The place where the number plate used to be is evident in this photo. The sign on the driver's seat reads "Éclairage electrique GRATUIT à l'intérieur de cette voiture" ("FREE electric light inside this carriage"). This innovation may have arisen from the fact that cabs were forced to carry batteries to power their electric meters. The carriage lamps flanking the driver's seat were probably electric as well. Not much power was required because the purpose of the lamps was simply to make the cab visible to customers and other traffic, not to light the way ahead. Some cabs also advertised that they were "voitures chauffées" or "heated carriages" and charged extra for this luxury.
