Les Femmes Cocher / 51

Mme. Véron / 4

Picture (left): Mme. Véron in her driver's seat.

Mme. Véron's meter is advertised as a "Compteur Français". This is a marketing ploy designed to appeal to French patriotism (the first taximeters were made in Germany). The meter's flag, attached to the little wheel, is in the "down" position to indicate that the meter is running.

The number plate (once located above the "Compteur" sign) is missing, but the cab's number (17013) is painted on the carriage lamp. The lamp glass is coloured. Lamps seem to have been colour-coded according to the cab's home district. Vance Thompson wrote in The Paris Cabman: "The side-lights showed red, so I knew it was a cab of my quarter and would journey not unwillingly out toward the Bois."
