Picture (left): Never fear, nervous customers, for we have the means to defend ourselves against thugs.

In this startling photo Mme. Decourcelle seems to be fending off a masher with the 1907 equivalent of pepper spray. Although murderous attacks on drivers seem to have become common only after the arrival of motor cabs violence against horse-cab drivers was apparently enough of a worry to warrant defensive measures.
