Les Femmes Cocher / 67
Mme. Decourcelle / 7
Picture (left): Mme. Decoucelle, the cabwoman-chauffeur, driving a taxicab in the Bois de Boulogne. Once women were granted horse-cab licenses they could not very well be refused motor cab licenses. And women could see, just as plainly as men, that horse-cabs were on their way to extinction. The automobile's novelty attracted customers but so did its speed and convenience. At 20 to 30 mph, automobiles travelled four to six times as fast as horse cabs. The speed meant more trips for the driver and therefore more money.
