Victoria and Blanche Picture (left): It's rapture, it's a delight, to go for a leisurely ride along the secluded drives of the Bois de Boulogne, with an amiable and charming cabbie, in a nice "Valentin's Company" carriage! But time passes quickly, and the meter has a surprise in store. Blanche Étienne waits for her fare while the meter gives her passenger the bad news. In the photo caption "taxi" refers to the taximeter but according to the Oxford English Dictionary "taxi" first emerged in 1907 as the word of choice to describe a cab vehicle, either motorized or horse-drawn, that was equipped with a taximeter.
