Gaito Gazdanov's Paris / 16
Danger
[A] customer would become my companion for the time being; during the space of a few minutes we would share the danger, more or less real, of an accident: it could happen that I and the man or woman with me would find ourselves on the Parisian pavement with our bodies broken, our breath failing.
Such a shared fate would have tied us together with stronger links than a long-time acquaintance would have, or even a blood relationship. [221]
