Taxi drivers in Madrid went on strike Saturday to protest the stabbing death of a colleague in an apparent robbery.
Many cabbies stopped driving immediately after the killing Friday night of 45-year-old Argentine Daniel Aguilera Gramada and assembled in a downtown plaza, honking horns and shouting for better protection. The protest continued Saturday morning and the city was largely without taxi service, news reports said.
The stoppage was to last until noon (1000 GMT), after which leaders of taxi drivers' unions were to meet with Interior Ministry officials.
Police said Aguilera Gramada was stabbed in the face and neck in an apparent robbery. No suspects have been arrested. They said it was the first time in years that a Madrid cabbie had been killed while on duty.

Madrid cabbie murder suspect gives himself up
By: thinkSPAIN
The 22 year old Brazilian youth at the top of the police's list of possible suspects in the case of the Madrid taxi driver murdered while on duty last Friday night, handed himself in to police in Hortaleza this morning.
Police say Osmar Estevao Do Nascimento, who is living in Spain illegally, had been under constant surveillance and was about to be arrested before finally cracking under the pressure.
The body of 50 year old Daniel Aníbal Aguilera, whose throat had been cut, was found inside his vehicle in Hortaleza last Friday night.
The incident sparked a demonstration by Madrid taxi drivers the following day in the Plaza de Cibeles to demand more effective security measures such as the installation of protective screens or cctv cameras.
