Robbers kill cabbie

By Joey Nacalaban

Victim stabbed to death; suspects abandon taxi

WHEN he took supper with his family at a fastfood outlet at past
11:00 p.m. last Monday, 27-year old taxi driver Ferdinand
Buhion and his wife never knew it would be the last meal they
would share together.

"Wala ko kahibalo kadto naman diay ang katapusan namong
panihapon uban sa among mga anak," a tearful Jennifer,
Ferdinand's widow, told media at a local funeral parlor Tuesday
morning. (I did not know it would be our last supper with out
children.)

Ferdinand was found by residents bleeding and barely breathing
after sustaining six stab wounds from suspected robbers in Sitio
Macanhan, Barangay Carmen at past 1:00 a.m. Tuesday.

Buhion, a resident of 6th division, Patag, sustained five stab
wounds in the chest and one on his stomach.

He was dumped along the road and found by residents in
Carmen.

One of the residents, who refused to be identified, told police she
was watching television when she heard a commotion outside
her house.

She said she peeped through the window and noticed a taxi with
three occupants inside.

"Pag tan-aw nako tulo man ka tawo ug ang duha ilang
gitabangan og layog ang drayber (I saw that there were three
men and two of them took turns beating up the driver)," she said.

Later, she noticed that one of the suspects alighted from the
vehicle and dragged the victim out. She then saw the car
speeding away from the area.

Another witness, a man, also told authorities he was inside his
home when he heard the mumbling of a man outside.

He said when he went outside to check he saw a white taxi with
three persons inside. He said he suspected that something wrong
was going on.

"Naghapa-hapa nalang ko sa among silong kay nahadlok ko
basin mga armado silag pusil (I hid under our house because I
feared that they may be armed with guns)," he said.

Later, he saw the taxi leaving the place with one of the suspects
already the one behind the wheel.

"I rode on my bike and chased after them but they were far
ahead," he said in Visayan.

Residents in the area tried to help the victim, who was at that
time still alive but their efforts proved futile.

At 3:30 a.m., Bulua police found the taxi driven by Buhion
abandoned at Zone 2, Bulua. The vehicle nearly ran out of fuel
and the driver's earnings of that day had gone missing.

Jeniffer, the victim's wife, said she could not believe what
happened to her husband.

The taxi owner named Orlando Mansano said Buhion was a
good man and friendly to people. He said as far as he knew, the
latter has no enemies or any grudge with fellow drivers.

A lot of taxi drivers were on hand at the funeral parlor to pay
their respects to the victim's wife and family.

Authorities are still looking for another possible angle regarding
the incident.

Scene of the Crime Operations (SOCO) said they had the taxi
driven by one of Manzano's people away from the crime scene,
though not without first fitting the driver with gloves and encasing
the driver's seat in plastic foil to preserve the prints.

Police get cabbie killer's sketches

By Joey P. Nacalaban

CRIMINAL Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 10 officials
remain confident that the case of the murdered taxi driver will
soon be resolved.

Authorities already managed to get cartographic sketches of the
two attackers.

Senior Inspector Bernardo Mendoza, Criminal Investigation and
Detection Group (CIDG) deputy chief, said his men managed to
convince witnesses to come out in the open and identify the taxi
driver's attackers.

Still, Mendoza said they are not ruling out the possibility that the
two might be long gone from the city. He said they are closing
out all exit points to prevent them from escaping.

During the incident, at least three persons declared they saw
what happened inside the taxi driven by 27-year-old Ferdinand
Buhion.

Buhion, residing at 6th division, Patag, Cagayan de Oro City,
was found dead along the road of Sitio Macanhan, Carmen last
August 13 at 1:45 a.m.

He sustained seven stab wounds in the different parts of his
body.

Residents in the area tried to help the victim who was at that
time still gasping for breath but to no avail.

Mendoza said the CIDG cartographer was able to draw the faces
of the two attackers based on the description of witnesses.

Mendoza also said aside from the witnesses in Macanhan, his
men also gathered information about what happened to the
victim minutes before he died.

Mendoza said he is also considering a report that Buhion fetched
a female singer from one of the city bars and took her to Zayas,
Carmen before he was killed.

"When the woman got out, two men boarded the taxi and these
men are believed to be the victim's assailants," Mendoza said in
Visayan.

Mendoza said police at Bulua recovered the vehicle driven by
Buhion in Zone 2 of the said barangay.

Inside the taxi they found a wallet, a mobile phone keypad, a hair
strand, and cash amounting to P605.

Jennefer, the victim's wife said, she is willing to file appropriate
charges against her husband's killers and hoped they would be
arrested soon.
