Sofia News Agency (Sofia, Bulgaria) February 9, 2007 Bulgarian Taxi Driver Killer Makes Full Confessions Crime: 9 February 2007, Friday. Bulgarian police arrested the killer of the taxi driver, who was murdered in the early hours of Friday. The murderer is the 27-year-old Sofia citizen Georgi Peykov. He made full written confessions after the arrest and even took police to the place where he had thrown the knife with which he stabbed the taxi driver. Peykov hired the cab in downtown Sofia to take him to Lyulin neighbourhood. When he saw the bill of BGN 15, he realised he didn't have the money and tried to escape. The driver Emil Emilov attempted to stop him but the killer took out a knife and stabbed the driver in the stomach. Than ran away. Emilov died minutes later, still driving the car, which at the moment of his death bumped into a street bin. The murderer was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said. Peykov was found and arrested in less than 12 hours. During the whole day taxis blocked Sofia as drivers gathered to protest in the wake of the murder of their colleague last night. The taxi driver, who was stabbed to death few days ago in Sofia, was buried on Tuesday. The funeral took place at the Sofia central cemetery. Emil Emilov was accompanied to his last resting place by dozens of his colleagues, who staged a rally of taxis. The police did not allow other cars to break the yellow rally in capital's streets. Emil Emilov, 51, employee of OK Supertrans Company, was killed on Friday while driving the taxi. The murder triggered massive protests of hundreds of his colleagues. Later in the day, 27-year-old Georgi Peykov confessed to the murder. The killer, who was arrested for the murder of the taxi driver on Friday, is innocent, a witness of the accident claimed. The eyewitness made his statement just four days after the murder in the Tuesday morning broadcast of the Nova TV channel. Later in the day, however, the Interior Minister Rumen Petkov denied the additional information, saying he was "offended". The witness said he was at the spot together with a friend when the taxi crashed in a street dustbin and went to see what was going on. He saw two individuals running out of the car. One of them hid between the residential blocks, the other went in the opposite direction. He and his friend immediately stopped another cab to report for the crime, as this was the first person they saw passing nearby. The witness is a student, who was going home after a Friday night out. He had been just 10 metres away from the crashed taxi. He also said it was too dark to see the criminals' faces but he was sure the arrested Georgi Peykov was not the killer. Police has still not questioned the student on the case. There is another witness, but this does not change the investigation, as the knife of the murder was found and Peykov confessed for the crime, spokeswoman of the Prosecutor's Office commented.
