Killer jailed for 10 years

Friday, June 29, 2007

AN unemployed man who murdered a taxi driver almost five
years ago has been jailed for 10 years.

Mohammed Harun Khan, who was a student of the University of
the South Pacific at the time of the murder, was yesterday
sentenced by High Court judge Justice Nazhat Shameem.

Khan, 25, was found guilty of murdering 60-year-old Abdul
Lateef in July 2002 who was reported missing on July 4 at the
Delailabasa police post.

The body of Lateef was found on July 11, after Khan led a team
of police officers to the scene in Wailevu, outside Labasa town.
Lateef was found in a steep slope with no shirt on.

State prosecutor Kiji Bavou, in her submission, said the body of
Lateef was missing for seven days before it was discovered by
police.

"They even went to Savusavu but it was only until they received
information that Khan was driving around in the taxi of the
deceased that they arrested him and took him to the station for
questioning," she said.

"It was the accused who led the police to the scene because he
knew where he had left the deceased."

Ms Bavou said witnesses had also seen Khan driving the taxi of
the deceased from Labasa to Savusavu which showed how bold
he was after killing Lateef.

A post mortem examination on the deceased showed he died
after his lungs were flooded which was caused by the fracture to
his ribs.
