South Africa: Taxi Driver Gunned Down

Andisiwe Makinana

Cape Town's taxi violence claimed yet another life when a 27-year-old
taxi driver was shot dead last night, bringing to nine the number of
taxi-related murders since the beginning of last month.

Vuyisani Mtyhobile, 27, of Kraaifontein, was fatally wounded during a
shooting incident in front of a house in La Boheme Street, Wallacedene,
at about 7.40pm.

Police spokesman Randall Stoffels said a man had approached Mtyhobile
after he had climbed into his minibus taxi and fired three shots at him.
Mtyhobile had been hit once in the head and died on the scene.

Stoffels said the suspected murderer was still at large.

Last night's killing comes a few days after investigators from the
police's provincial organised crime unit arrested four men in
Khayelitsha in connection with taxi violence.

Police are also investigating a case of murder and attempted murder
after they discovered the bodies of a man and a woman, both with gunshot
wounds to the head, in a Bonteheuwel house at about 8pm yesterday.
Another man, aged 29, was found seriously injured with a wound to the
head in the house.
