Teen re-arrested over taxi driver death

By By Marissa Carruthers

A teenager has been arrested again in connection with the death of a veteran taxi driver.

Pensioner Raymond Quigley suffered a heart attack and died after he was the victim of an attack in Beechbrooke, Ryhope, earlier this year.

The 72-year-old cabbie, of Nursery Lane, Felling, had driven his cab from Newcastle to Ryhope in the early hours of Sunday, September 2.

He was believed to have been attacked at around 3.30am and died an hour later at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Sunderland police initially arrested a 17-year-old youth on suspicion of murder.

Now, police have revealed that the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been rearrested and bailed.

A police spokeswoman said: "A 17-year-old, who was originally arrested, has been rearrested on suspicion of manslaughter and bailed pending further inquiries."

Police launched a major inquiry after Mr Quigley, who was just weeks away from retiring, was found injured in the middle of the road.

His black VW Passat, which was found abandoned at Waterworks Road, was searched for clues by foren
sic officers, and police cordoned off homes on the Sunderland estate while they carried out door-to-door inquiries.

His sons, Daniel, 39, of Roker, Patrick, 36, of West Boldon, Shaun, 47, of High Heworth, Gateshead, along with daughter Maria, 42, and her husband Tom, 43, were all left devastated by the tragedy.

The dad-of-three and grandad-of-six was described by his heartbroken son, Shaun, as a "superhero".

He said: "He was a superhero to us all. He gave all he could to his children. We had the best of everything.

"He was a deeply religious man who went to church every Sunday. A real gentleman.

"He didn't smoke or gamble. He didn't even spend money on himself."

Mr Quigley, a Black Cats fan, had held a hackney licence since 1987. He had been due to celebrate his 73rd birthday just weeks after his death and was looking forward to retiring before the end of this year.
