Times-Picayune April 25, 1998 SUSPECT INDICTED IN 1980 MURDER HE ADMITS ROLE IN CABBIE'S DEATH Eighteen years after a cabdriver was gunned down in New Orleans' Garden District, an Avondale man went to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and confessed that he took part in the crime. An Orleans Parish grand jury indicted (Albert) Gauthreaux this week with first-degree murder in the death of Raymond Schoenberger on Jan. 18, 1980. Schoenberger, 20, was found shot in the head in the front seat of his taxi in the 400 block of Eighth Street after an apparent robbery. It was just his third day as a cabdriver. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Times-Picayune August 19, 1998 JURY ACQUITS MAN IN KILLING CABDRIVER SHOT IN 1980 ROBBERY Albert Gauthreaux went to authorities last fall and admitted he helped rob a cabdriver in the Irish Channel 18 years ago but said another man fired the shot that killed the cabbie. However, Mark Benoit, the accomplice Gauthreaux blamed, took the stand Monday in Gauthreaux's first-degree murder trial and testified that Gauthreaux had shot the cabdriver in the head. Faced with finger-pointing and a lack of physical evidence, a New Orleans jury late Monday deliberated less than two hours before acquitting Gauthreaux.
