Taxi driver murdered in Mwanza
BY DEBORAH NYANGULU

A 26-year-old taxi driver was on Tuesday found brutally murdered by unknown assailants in Mwanza.

The taxi driver was strangled with a wire, had stab wounds that left a 7.5 cm hole in the neck.

Mwanza Police Spokesperson, Helix Malekano confirmed the murder and identified the victim as Limbikani Shaba.

Malekano said police investigations have so far not yet yielded any arrests.

“However we have some strong leads and we are doing all we can to bring the culprits to book,’ Malekano said.

He said it appears that the assailants approached the taxi driver and hired him to drive them to Kunenekude, which is a trading centre 15km from the Mwanza border.

The murder, Malekano said, probably occurred when they were on their way to the trading centre.

“But it seems these attackers didn´t want to go to the trading centre but to take the car into Mozambique. Unfortunately the car ran out of fuel before they crossed into Mozambique and they just dumped the vehicle near Saiti Village,’ Malekano said.

Malekano said passers by later found the body of the taxi driver which was lying in the back seat of the car.

He said postmortem results have shown that Shaba died of strangulation and he was already dead when the assailants made the 7.5cm hole in his neck.

The taxi driver was driving a Toyota Corolla registration number CE1174 that belongs to a Mr Muthali.

The police have since warned taxi drivers against driving alone at night
