Balvir Singh Toor Winnipeg, Manitoba / March 19, 2020 Sometime around 5 o'clock on the morning of Thursday, March 19, 2020, Duffy's Taxi driver Balvir Singh Toor was driving a 20-year-old man west along Burrows Avenue in Winnipeg's North End.
Just after they crossed McGregor Street the man attacked Mr. Toor, fatally stabbing him. The car stopped in the west-bound traffic lane, slightly angled toward the right.
Mr. Toor managed to activate his distress beacon, alerting neighbours who called the police. Officers arrived at the scene at 5:30 a.m. and Mr. Toor was rushed to hospital where he later died.
Police arrested the suspect shortly after 9 p.m. the same day. He was charged with second-degree murder.
Mr. Toor, 44, was married with three children. He was a Duffy's owner-driver and had been with the company for about ten years.
Corey D J Rempel, a subscriber to a Winnipeg community facebook site ("We Love Point Douglas") posted this message on hearing of his death:
"""RIP Mr. Balvir Toor. This is the cab driver that came back to HSC [Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre] children's [hospital] with my wallet and all the money. [...] Below was my post about his integrity and honesty:
"
"So I'm going to share this because never have I seen this happen, and I believe credit should be given where it is due....
"This morning we took our 1 year old to children's emergency and in the rush to get the baby and her diaper bag and car seat out and into the hospital my wallet fell out in the cab.
"This wasn't realized until 15 minutes later when getting our baby's medical card and so I called Duffys to ask them to contact the driver to see if it was dropped in the cab (at this point we didn't know if it was in the cab or fell outside the cab.)

"The cab company called back saying the wallet was in the cab and the driver would come back to the hospital shortly. The cab [company] called when he arrived and asked me to double check everything was there.
"Sure enough all $450.00 was there. So thank you to Balvir Toor for being a person with integrity and honesty. (PS -- the baby is a-okay).
