Gaito Gazdanov's Paris / 37

Raldi suggests a career change

One day she asked me:

“Don’t you find it ridiculous to be a taxi driver? Do you really think this job suits you?”

She offered her help to repay me, as she put it, for my humane attitude.

“I’m going to take care of your future, you’re stilll young and in good health, apparently.”

I looked at her in astonishment. She explained that she had a lot of contacts, that she knew women who were not so old, forty, forty-three, Frenchwomen, Englishwomen…

Sitting by her side in a cafe, I laughed like mad, unable to stop. Then, through tears of laughter, I thanked her.

“So you find this unacceptable? Well, maybe it’s better that you spend your life behind the wheel of a cab. Are you so full of prejudices?” [72]
