Gaito Gazdanov's Paris / 5

The bank director

An impeccably-dressed gentleman, whom I drove from Claridge’s hotel to the gare de Lyon, handed me a hundred-franc note.

When I told him I didn’t have enough change he said he would get some, left – and never returned; he was a respectable-looking character, with white hair, smoked a good cigar and reminded me of a bank director – perhaps he was one. [23]
