Source materials
George Edward Heath, London, Oct. 7, 1944. Shot to death near Staines. An
American soldier named Gustav Hulton and his 17-year-old English girlfriend,
Georgina Grayson were convicted of his murder and sentenced to death.
Hulton was hanged, but Grayson was reprieved and paroled in 1954. The
murder was sensationalized as the "Cleft Chin Murder". Mr. Heath had a
prominent cleft in his chin, and this is how he was described before his
name became public. George Orwell wrote about the case in his essay, "The
Decline of English Murder". A Google search on "cleft chin murder" brings
up several hits. Grayson wanted to be a stripper, but as Orwell acidly
remarks she gave only one unsuccessful performance in this line. The story
became the basis for the 1990 Kiefer Sutherland movie "Chicago Joe and the
Showgirl".

Heath drove an unlicenced taxi, was hailed on Hammersmith Broadway.

Hulton was a deserter from the US military, was executed by the British.
