Terry Smythe

Now Retired from his former position as General Manager, Manitoba Taxicab Board, Terry Smythe retained a strong interest in helping the taxicab industry. First exposed to this unique industry in 1971, as a consequence of development of the compulsory Manitoba Government automobile insurance program, specifically for commercial vehicles, including taxicabs and limousines. Cummulatively, his experience with this industry now sums to 16+ years, mostly from the regulatory viewpoint.

In 1995, he developed and implemented an internet based world wide discussion group for this industry. In its early years, its participants included drivers, owners, managers, dispatchers, regulators, journalists, researchers, librarians, users, consultants, etc. Over time, the population of the discussion group has taken on a mirror image of the world population within this industry.

Discussions that once ranged over the full array of topics such as regulatory issues, safety issues, insurance issues, common law issues, interpersonal relationships, the leasing environment, etc. Over time, in reflection of the dominant participation, discussions have tended to focus on issues affecting drivers.

The name - "TAXI-L" - implies it is a web site of interest to the whole of this industry, plus a mailing list for people within this industry. Recently migrated to a new moderator, see the discussion group at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Taxi-List/.

The web site itself is quite large, now containing a huge array of documentation not available anywhere else in the world, in one place. Contributions into this library are invited and encouraged. Should be of interest to many worldwide. See: the TAXI-L Web Site, now known as Taxi-Library.
