Mohamed Beyh

Montréal, Québec / June 8, 2003

Mr. Beyh, 36, was last seen driving near the Queen Elizabeth Hotel at about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 8. On Monday night a truck driver found Mr. Beyh's olive green 1995 Ford Aerostar van concealed in bush alongside highway 401 near Cornwall, Ontario. Police found traces of blood inside the van.

Mr. Beyh had been driving a taxi for only four months. He was married with two small daughters, one five years old and the other 18 months. "I tell them: Papa has gone, he'll come back soon, don't worry," said Mrs. Beyh. "They see me crying every day, they know very well that something has happened."

Several people reported seeing a suspicious-looking man walking along highway 401 near Cornwall early on Sunday morning. On June 22 the Ontario Provincial Police issued a composite sketch of the man, described as being between 45 and 50 years old and exhibiting distinctive birthmarks on his face.

The composite sketch produced no immediate leads. Adding to the family's anguish the OPP and Montréal police each referred inquiries to the other force. "I call Cornwall and they tell me to call Montréal, where my brother disappeared," said David Mr. Beyh. "In Montréal, they tell me the investigation is being carried out primarily in Ontario, where the vehicle was found."

In a cruel twist, an early media report stated that Mr. Beyh had been found alive and well and was being interrogated by the OPP to explain his disappearance.

Mr. Beyh's remains were discovered on July 14 by residents of Pointe Claire in suburban Montréal. They had searched a waste area between Highway 20 and a railway line to determine the origin of a strong odor.

A wallet and papers belonging to Mr. Beyh were found near the body and the identification was confirmed by an autopsy.

This case is one of three which crossed interprovincial boundaries. Montréal driver Octavio Velasquez was murdered near Arnprior ON and Flin Flon MB driver Dorion Simon was killed across the border in Creighton SK.
