Alexandre Drolet, 62, was found dead in his cab on Diab street in a St. Laurent industrial park.
The 20-year-old South Asian killer had systematically slashed Mr. Drolet's face and neck and then fled the cab leaving behind some of his own possessions. About an hour after Mr. Drolet's body was discovered the killer phoned police to tell them about the murder. He later turned himself in, bringing Mr. Drolet's wallet with him.
The killer was mentally disturbed and robbery was apparently not the motive. Mr. Drolet died from the effects of the attack in combination with heart disease.
The killer was tried and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Mr. Drolet was survived by his wife Hélène, his brothers and sisters and several nieces and nephews. Hélène Drolet published a note in La Presse and Le Soleil thanking co-workers at La Salle Taxi and Dorval Airport and taxi drivers from Québec City and Trois-Rivières for their expressions of friendship, regret and sympathy.
