Joel Mutungu Ngugi was stabbed to death in Thunder Bay on March 6, 1995. Mr. Ngugi immigrated to Canada from Kenya in 1989 and graduated from Lakehead University with a degree in economics in 1993. He married a local woman and was driving a cab to save money to start a new business.
A 24-year-old man was arrested for the murder. The killer was out on parole and being treated as a psychiatric outpatient at the time.
Local drivers held benefits to help Mr. Ngugi's widow to defray some of the $12,000 it cost her to accompany his body back to Kenya. His funeral was attended by some 500 people, including the Kenyan vice-president.
