Requirement No.10 - Transferring from wheelchairs

10. Transferring from wheelchairs    
10.1 Where a wheelchair users wishes to transfer to a vehicle seat this must be possible by either using a swivel seat (see requirement 5) or by transferring within the vehicle. For transfer within the vehicle a minimum headroom of 1400mm between the floor and the roof must be provided in the transfer area.   Some wheelchair users prefer to transfer to a seat when travelling in a vehicle. This requirement provides for there to be sufficient headroom both for the disabled person and the person helping them if the transfer is made inside the vehicle.
10.2 A transfer board must be carried on the vehicle and stowed safely when not in use. A transfer board can be used to facilitate a transfer from a wheelchair to a seat when requested by the disabled passenger. A transfer board is used to enable a disabled persons to move more easily from their wheelchair to a vehicle seat. Typical transfer boards have a smooth surface and dimensions of: length 750mm; width 300mm; depth 15mm.
10.3 A space must be provided in the vehicle to stow a wheelchair after transfer of the passenger if it cannot be placed and secured in the designated space.   An unoccupied wheelchair must be properly secured so that it cannot cause injury to passengers when the vehicle is moving.
