Les Femmes Cocher / 140
A Cocher Miscellany / 7
Picture (left): It's easy enough to sneer. See him taking a busybody's pleasure in reading about dogs getting run over. Another less than affectionate look at the cab driving fraternity, probably reflecting a class hostility between cab riders and cab drivers that must have lurked in the background of most cab trips. Middle class riders were used to dealing with docile servants and employees but cab drivers were outside their direct control and reveled in a degree of independence which could be upsetting and even frightening. The name "Urbaine" and what may be an obliterated cab number are visible below the driver's seat. The Compagnie Urbaine was one of the two largest cab companies in Paris. The driver is wearing the Urbaine's white uniform so he may be a real driver rather than an actor.
