Picture (left): Driver, by the hour and at a walk! Here we have another couple seeking a nice, slow, quiet drive. The accommodating driver offers to find a street with wood-block paving so that the pair won't be disturbed by the rumble of steel tires over the cobblestones. In North America wood was cheap and wooden paving, which was surprisingly durable, offered an affordable alternative to stone. But in Europe wooden paving was too expensive to use except where the need to dampen traffic noise was critical (Parisian wood blocks came from Russia). The noise problem caused so much concern that in England experiments were actually carried out with rubber paving.
