The taxi stand
Saturday was the most arduous day of the week and the most lucrative. In winter, I spent whole nights in lines of taxis outside the lighted entrances of dance halls.
Apart from taxi drivers, other people waited, hoping to earn a few sous, in their own manner: malodorous, shivering wretches, in rags, opened doors, a flower girl tried to sell her three or four bouquets of violets to gentlemen who were accompanied by ladies, an individual with blue coveralls and a businesslike manner offered his assistance in fixing stalled cars.
