Nevertheless it was Marie Kane who tipped the police off about one of her brother's confederates, John Simonds. Three detectives quickly went to his home and found him lying in the attic on a pile of rags, still wearing his bloodstained clothes.
Simonds was identified as one of the bandits by both Robert Campion and William Willard. By 4 p.m. he had made a full confession to Inspector John Wheeler and implicated Robert O'Brien as an accomplice. Wheeler told reporters he expected to have O'Brien arrested the same night.
