Jean Maurice Tringle

Farnham, Québec / June 6, 1975

On Friday, June 6, 1975, independent taxi driver Jean Maurice Tringle, 47, was called to a house in nearby Dunham. When he entered the house he was killed by an axe blow to the head. Two men stole about $100 from the dead man and drove away in his taxi.

The two men, aged 25 and 21, had escaped the previous day from the medium-security Cowansville penitentiary. The 25-year-old was serving a four-year sentence for housebreaking and theft and the 21-year-old was serving 42 months for fraud. The two killers broke into the Dunham house whose residents were away on a three-day weekend.

Mr. Tringle's body was found when the homeowners returned from their weekend. The escapees were immediately suspected and warrants were issued for their arrest following a coroner's inquest.

On Tuesday the two killers were captured at a chalet in Piopolis following the abortive robbery of a motel in Lac Megantic. They were still driving Mr. Tringle's taxi.
