The Cab-Hold-Up Affair / 9
The Muggings / 3
Another victim was Fred Nichols, aged 55, who was attacked at the corner of Johnson Street and West 18th Avenue, about a block west of South Halsted.
By now beat cops all over Chicago were looking for Campion's cab. At 4:30 a.m. one of them, Edward T. Murphy of the 22nd Street station, was on patrol at Archer and West 18th Streets when he saw a cab tearing south on South Halstead "at breakneck speed".
The crime spree had apparently turned into a drunken joy ride. Instead of surrepticiously trolling for victims the culprits were making themselves unnecessarily conspicuous.
