Pierre Segogny.

This poster by Pierre Segogny (1890-1958) presents a real mystery. It is dated 1923, but Rachel did not appear at the Empire Music Hall, under the stage name Diany Dorange, until April, 1925. Even then she received very low billing and it seems unlikely that her status would merit a full-colour poster of her own. Things were different in 1933 after her long-distance rides made her famous.

The date under Segogny's distinctive curlicue signature looks suspiciously like it has been added to the poster by someone else, especially since several other Segogny posters bearing this style of signature do not have dates. Moreover L'Oeuvre's 1933 review mentions a poster with Rachel in a black leotard that was then "adorning the walls of Paris" which sounds a lot like Segogny's poster.

Did Rachel commission the poster to evoke her brief Empire Music Hall career as Diany Dorange in 1925 (page 5)? Not surprisingly the 1933 Cirque d'Hiver ads call her Rachel, the name by which the public knew her, rather than Diany.

Posters bearing Segogny's curlicue signature, though not dated, are attributed to the years from circa 1924 to circa 1930. Segogny created many movie posters in the 1940s but his signature on these is in printed capital letters.
