On December 29, 1958, the franc fell in value to 2/10 of a U.S. cent (493.706 francs per U.S. dollar). On January 1, 1960, a New Franc (NF) equal to 100 old francs was introduced, bringing the value of the franc up to 20 U.S. cents.

It seems probable that the "$20,000" lawsuit is actually 20,000 New Francs, equal to $4,000 (20,000 old francs would only equal $40). See "Foreign Exchange Rates," Federal Reserve Bulletin, October, 1961, p. 1267 (via Fraser, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis).

Even after the introduction of the New Franc French newspapers liked to quote big sums (lawsuits, government expenditures, lottery winnings) in old franc values because the headlines were more spectacular.
