The article's title is a pun (sort of). Commenting that Rachel's penguin/auk Alfred had been unable to protect her from malicious gossip the article mentions in passing that Arctic/Antarctic explorer Richard E. Byrd has been given an Alfred as a lucky charm on his forthcoming transatlantic flight. In fact, Byrd and two companions had already made their flight from the U.S. to France on July 1, 1927. In 1928 Byrd was in the Antarctic making preparations for his 1929 overflight of the South Pole (Wikipedia).

In 1927 Byrd and his crew made headlines and were welcomed everywhere as heros so it is not impossible, given creator Alain Saint-Ogan's marketing instincts, that Byrd was awarded an Alfred whether he chose to acknowledge it or not.
